Gum Therapy

Non-Surgical gum disease treatment

If you've been diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, the good news is that it often can be treated successfully. Gum disease treatment methods depend upon how far the condition has progressed. The emphasis at CHIESA DENTAL CARE is on conservative periodontal therapy. Many times, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy.

Did you know that gum disease isn’t just bad news for your teeth; it’s also linked to serious health problems in other parts of your body? Gum disease increases your risk of all kinds of other health complications, including stroke, diabetes and heart disease. Periodontal disease in pregnant women may also be a significant risk factor for preterm low birth weight babies.

Scaling & Root Planing

The Tooth Below The Gum

This usually consists of placing a fine ultrasonic tip or hand scaler/curette in between the tooth and gum tissue to remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) below the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surfaces. This procedure is commonly known as Scaling and Root Planing or Periodontal Debridement. This initial periodontal therapy along with good personal oral hygiene allows the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Four to six weeks later, periodontal pockets are eliminated due to gum shrinkage (if the disease is in its earliest stage). Then the patient can personally maintain these areas with routine brushing and flossing.

Even in most severe cases of periodontal disease, non-surgical periodontal therapy most often precedes surgical therapy. At CHIESA DENTAL CARE in Hamilton, Ontario we also offer laser periodontal therapy to make your gum treatments more comfortable.

Traditional treatment of gum disease, called periodontitis, requires cutting and folding back the gums to clean the surface of the root of the affected teeth.

Diode Laser Deep Pocket Therapy is a non-surgical laser therapy for gum disease.

The Diode Laser can go between teeth and gums, clean the root surface, remove diseased tissue, kill germs, and remove calculus. This helps the gum reattach to the tooth to keep harmful bacteria out no scalpels or sutures necessary.
