A natural tooth consists of a crown (the part above the gum) and the root (the part hidden under the gum within the jaw bone). The root is the portion which actually holds the natural tooth in place. A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the gum and jaw bone which serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing tooth.
The missing tooth crown is retained by the implant. This procedure allows for increased aesthetics and function. Dental Implants function, feel and look just like natural teeth and problems with treatment are uncommon.
If you have more than 1 natural tooth missing, Dr. Chiesa can use dental implants to support/retain a fixed bridge to restore the missing teeth. Three or four unit bridges can be placed between two or three implants. This type of dental restoration is secure, lifelike and requires no preparation of the natural teeth adjacent to the missing dentition. The bridgework may also be delivered using a screw-retained technique so that it can be removed by a dental professional in the future should this become necessary, for example in case the porcelain breaks and needs to be repaired.
