Root Canal Therapy

The goal of root canal treatment is to retain your tooth in your dental arch. Why? By doing root canal treatment, we can preserve the jaw bone that supports it, to provide a surface on which to chew food and to prevent the collapse of neighbouring teeth.

When the nerve or pulp of your tooth becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause pain, swelling, and throbbing. This can be a result of trauma to the tooth or bacteria from decay. Root canal or endodontic therapy simply removes the source of infection along with blood and nerve supply in the tooth, after which an inert filling material is placed to seal the tooth. Generally, a crown is recommended to strengthen and protect your tooth.

Common symptoms of a root canal infection include:

  • Sharp, acute or intense pain
  • Pain when biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Tooth feels higher when biting
  • Tenderness and swelling of soft tissue around the tooth
  • Bad taste in the mouth

Dr. Chiesa assures your comfort before, during and after this treatment. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may. Root canal treatments are designed to save your teeth not cause pain!
